Darmstadt, GERMANY — SCIEX, a global leader in life science analytical technologies, hosted the 7th Berliner LC-MS/ MS Symposium, which took place from 13th-15th March 2017 at the Estrel Hotel in Berlin. The Symposium included a diverse programme of talks from internationally respected researchers and analytical scientists. These covered the latest mass spectrometry developments in pharmaceutical, omics, precision medicine, environmental, water, food and forensic applications. Since this event debuted in 2005, the Symposium has been growing in popularity. A record-breaking 700 participants turned out at the Symposium, despite the strikes at both Berlin airports.
On the first day of the Symposium, over 250 members took part in the offered courses, and chose to either present their posters or debate in specialist teams. The evening concluded with live jazz music and a lecture by Prof. Fritz Sörgel on the increased use of medicine in sport and society. The Symposium also included a plenary session that focused on the current trends and new developments in mass spectrometry, followed by an afternoon of talks divided into parallel themes including food analysis, environmental and drinking water analysis, clinical chemistry, toxicology and forensic analysis, biochemistry and omics applications and pharmaceutical analysis. The talks were delivered by forty-nine speakers including Prof Gérard Hopfgartner, University of Geneva, Switzerland; Prof Jens Brockmeyer, Stuttgart University, Germany, and a number of other high profile scientists.
During the Symposium, a selected exhibition provided information about LC-MS/MS products from numerous life science companies. There were plenty of lively exchanges between scientists and users about the posters exhibited at the event. Five of these posters were awarded prizes at the end of the Symposium. Attendees also took part in two discussion workshops on special challenges in food analysis, where they had the opportunity to meet the scientists involved in the preparation of MS/MS spectra libraries.
