Scientists at London-based gardens will leverage PerkinElmer’s infrared imaging technology for botanical science research
WHAT: PerkinElmer, Inc., a global leader in innovating for a healthier world, today announced that researchers at the Royal Botantic Gardens, Kew will utilize PerkinElmer’s Spotlight™ 200 FT-IR Microscopy System to analyze samples from the Garden’s collection of 8.5 million plant and fungal specimens.
WHERE: The Biochemistry Laboratory at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew in the U.K.
HOW: The Spotlight 200 FT-IR Microscopy System is a high-performance microscopy platform, designed to generate high-quality and reproducible data from a variety of sample types. The combination of a fully-automated, easy-to-use system with exceptional sensitivity ensures that quality spectra are obtained from sample areas down to the diffraction limit of 10 microns.
PerkinElmer’s on-site team of specialists will provide training to educate laboratory staff on best practices for IR-based sample preparation, measurement, interpretation, as well as data collection.
WHY: The technology will enable the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew to expand its position as a global resource by advancing and disseminating knowledge of plants and fungi. The laboratory will use the equipment to assist in the identification of plants, especially endangered species, as well as medicinal plants and fungi.
MORE: “Climate change, a rising world population, overharvesting and deforestation have caused unprecedented effects on biodiversity—placing increased stress on the health of humans and the environment. Because plants and fungi provide life-sustaining processes and materials, they may hold the key to preventing further damage to an already delicate ecosystem,” said Carl Raimond, Global Vice President and General Manager, Sales and Service, Discovery and Analytical Solutions, PerkinElmer. “The scientific work conducted at Kew Gardens is, therefore, critical in determining a solution. PerkinElmer is proud to collaborate with the Royal Botantic Gardens, Kew and support their mission to build a greater understanding of the world’s plants and fungi, upon which all lives depend.”
