Cell separation – faster and more reliable than ever

Cell separation – faster and more reliable than ever

Magnetic cell separation has become a common method for isolating specific cell types from blood samples, dissociated tissues, and cell suspensions. Miltenyi Biotec has just launched the automated MultiMACS X device, which enables parallel and reliable processing of up to 24 samples or large volumes. This fully automated solution reduces labor and minimizes contamination risks.

25 years ago, Miltenyi Biotec developed the first MACS® Columns that enabled scientists to perform magnetic cell separation in their own labs. Since then, this technology has been continuously optimized and its applications have become more user-friendly. Miltenyi Biotec’s MultiMACS X device now allows fully automated performance of all steps, as well as standardized handling of large volumes, high cell numbers, or up to 24 samples in parallel. This process enables the user to continue working with the isolated cell type of interest after just 40 minutes.

Starting material for cell separation can be various blood products, mononuclear cells from peripheral blood, as well as dissociated tissues. All of these samples can be subjected to positive cell isolation as well as depletion strategies. Like most of Miltenyi Biotec’s equipment, the MultiMACS X device reduces workload in the lab substantially. “An intuitively operated touchscreen ensures easy handling while the fully automated cell separation procedure saves valuable manpower and provides reliable and reproducible results,” states Dr. Oliver Schilling, Senior Project Leader, MultiMACS X Development Team at Miltenyi Biotec.

Thanks to its optimized, compact design, the MultiMACS X is easy to integrate into any lab and can be used either as a stand-alone-device or as a module in a fully automated cell processing system. “With the MultiMACS X, we have succeeded in developing a device that offers flexible and versatile applications and therefore can be used in the pharma or biotech industry as well as in routine labs “, says Dr. Schilling.

Cell labeling and separation with the MultiMACS X instrument is based on MACS Technology, which has been cited in more than 20.000 publications. This technology represents the gentlest way of separating cells available on the market and can be applied to nearly any cell type. This is made possible by combining Miltenyi Biotec equipment with the superparamagnetic MACS MicroBeads and the steep magnetic gradient of the MACS Columns.
