Smiths Detection secures multiple contracts to deliver enhanced detection solutions and bolster China’s security measures

BEIJING —

Smiths Detection expands number of CAAC certified solutions to six, boosting threat detection capabilities in China

Smiths Detection, a global leader in threat detection and screening technologies, today announced a number of recent wins in China, including the sale of 151 IONSCAN 600, which will be deployed across Chongqing Jiangbei International AirportQingdao Liuting International AirportShanghai Pudong International Airport as well as Kunming ChangshuiLijiangDehong MangshiPu‘erWenshan and Cangyuan airports managed by Yunnan Airport Group.

China is set to become the world’s largest aviation market by 2022[1] and the country’s outbound travel market is also forecast to continue to grow. By 2030, the number of outbound trips made by Chinese travellers is expected to reach 400 million, and Chinese tourists alone will account for a quarter of international tourism[2]. To ensure adequate support for this growth, airports need to have security solutions that can detect concealed explosives or narcotics effectively, without disrupting passenger flow or experience at checkpoints.

The IONSCAN 600 accurately detects and identifies a wide range of military, commercial and homemade explosives threats, as well as common illegal and controlled narcotics – all within eight seconds. The portable trace detector was approved for explosives trace detection as part of the passenger and baggage screening process within Chinese airports by the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) earlier this February. In addition, IONSCAN 600 was awarded the Gold Award – Special Prize, Country of Honour at the China International Industry Fair in Shanghai in November 2017.

“Airports in China are expected to see a significant rise in passenger throughput and we are honoured to play a role in ensuring the safety of all travellers passing through our partner airports,” said Jerome de Chassey, Smiths Detection’s Vice President for the Asia Pacific Region. “The CAAC certification of our products is testament to Smiths Detection’s expertise in threat detection and our relentless drive to assure the safety of airports in China today through the delivery of high quality and reliable solutions. This certification is important to Smiths Detection as our organisation aims to grow market presence in Asia Pacific including China.”

In addition to the IONSCAN 600, the CAAC has recently certified five other Smiths Detection’s solutions, a recognition of the high level of performance, reliability and quality of Smiths Detection products. The CAAC-certified products include:

  • CTX 5800TM – a CT explosives detection system (EDS) that provides high-resolution 3D images for quick and accurate threat detection in space or weight restricted environments.
  • CTX 9800 DSiTM 0.3m/s and CTX 9800 DSiTM 0.5m/s – an explosives detection system (EDS) that uses a proprietary single X-ray source with dual energy design to provide high-resolution 3D images along with 2D and 3D organic/inorganic material discrimination. These imaging tools enhance the analysis of details and specific structures of suspected threats, allowing for more efficient security decisions to be made on all checked bags and cargo packages.
  • HI-SCAN 6040p-2is HR – an advanced dual-view X-ray inspection system for the automatic detection of solid and liquid explosives in personal belongings and cabin baggage. It has an ergonomic design that makes it easy for the operator to identify threats on screen.
  • HISCAN 100100Tc-2is – a dual-angle cargo transportation X-ray machine that can scan from both directions, shortening scanning time while improving detection efficiency, and facilitates the scanning of oversized baggage and heavier cargo.
